VAT Registration in the UAE: Who Needs to Register and When

UAE VAT Registration Guide for Businesses

VAT registration in the UAE is an important compliance step for businesses that reach the prescribed taxable turnover threshold. Understanding the UAE VAT registration threshold, eligibility rules and registration deadline helps businesses avoid compliance issues and plan their tax obligations with confidence.

Who Needs to Register for VAT in the UAE?

A UAE resident business must register for VAT when the value of its taxable supplies and imports exceeds AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or when the business expects to exceed AED 375,000 in the next 30 days.

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) confirms that this mandatory VAT registration threshold applies to resident businesses. Businesses approaching the threshold should monitor their taxable turnover regularly to determine when registration becomes necessary.

Voluntary VAT Registration in the UAE

Businesses that are not required to register may still choose voluntary VAT registration.

A UAE resident business can apply for voluntary VAT registration when its taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500 over the previous 12 months, or when the business expects to exceed that amount in the next 30 days.

Voluntary VAT registration can be useful for growing businesses that want to establish VAT compliance before reaching the mandatory registration threshold.

VAT Registration for Non-Resident Businesses

The rules can be different for non-resident businesses.

A non-resident business making taxable supplies in the UAE may be required to register for VAT regardless of the value of those supplies when there is no other person in the UAE responsible for accounting for the VAT.

Businesses operating across borders should therefore assess their UAE VAT position carefully rather than relying only on the AED 375,000 threshold.

When Should You Register for VAT?

Once a business becomes required to register for VAT, it must submit its VAT registration application to the FTA within 30 days of becoming liable.

VAT registration is completed through the FTA's EmaraTax platform. After approval, the VAT registration certificate is made available through the taxpayer's online account.

Businesses should avoid waiting until the last moment to begin the registration process. Keeping financial records and monitoring taxable turnover regularly can make it easier to identify when the registration obligation arises.

What Counts Toward the VAT Registration Threshold?

The VAT registration threshold is based on taxable supplies and imports.

Taxable supplies can include supplies subject to the standard 5% VAT rate as well as zero-rated supplies. Exempt supplies are treated differently and should not simply be added to taxable turnover when assessing VAT registration eligibility.

Businesses should therefore understand the VAT treatment of their individual goods and services before calculating their registration position.

Accurate accounting records are particularly important when monitoring the rolling 12-month threshold and expected turnover for the next 30 days.

What Happens After VAT Registration?

After successfully registering for VAT, a business receives a Tax Registration Number (TRN) and becomes responsible for meeting its ongoing VAT obligations.

Depending on its circumstances, the business may need to charge VAT on taxable supplies, maintain appropriate records, issue compliant tax invoices, file VAT returns and pay VAT due to the FTA within the applicable deadlines.

VAT registration is therefore not simply a one-time application. It marks the beginning of ongoing tax compliance responsibilities.

Get Your UAE VAT Registration Right

VAT registration is more than reaching a specific turnover figure. Businesses need to determine whether their supplies are taxable, assess the correct registration category and submit accurate information to the FTA.

For founders and growing companies in the UAE, getting this assessment right early can make ongoing VAT compliance easier and help reduce the risk of avoidable compliance issues.
